Tweedy Poster

client: clearwater spring splash/jeff tweedy

[Designer’s comment] Clearwater’s 2009 Spring Splash concert featured an unusual solo appearance by Wilco’s very popular iconoclastic singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy. For the poster a number of different takes both modern and traditional were tried. Starting with just basic text copy, we conducted photo and background research and began constructing layered photographic art using images gathered from Tweedy’s videos and promotional art, as well as a stock “blue sky” photo representing one of Tweedy’s latest song titles. Clearwater’s first choice was the second outtake (at right)—a classic rockstar look—but it turned out to be Tweedy’s guitar player (not him), so they went with the design in the first version (right), however when Tweedy’s PR people saw it they said we had to use their "official" shots, so the final version was really last version seen at right. [typography] Type was finally set in a limited edition Font Bureau font Vonnes although Giza, Garage and Antenna were also tried. [tech note] In addition to graphic design/production NYDL also managed printing; the poster ran 12" x 18" on 14pt gloss cover stock.
